"Between Hitler and Stalin: Ukraine in World War II" - book launch

The Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre invites you to the launch of a new book called "Between Hitler and Stalin: Ukraine in World War II"

This publication, co-authored by Wsevolod Isajiw, Andrew Gregorovich and Oleh Romanyschyn is a reader’s companion to the documentary film ‘Between Hitler and Stalin: Ukraine in World War II, the Untold Story’, produced in 2003 by UCRDC. It provides a concise recapitulation of events that are often little known outside of the Ukrainian community or by the community’s younger generation.

Readers will learn why "the greatest battle in the history of the world" according to Hitler happened in Ukraine, why Ukraine was not a German collaborator like other countries in this period, why both Hitler and Stalin needed to occupy Ukraine, forms of resistance in Ukraine, German retreat and Soviet re-occupation, relations with Poland, ethnic cleansing in Ukraine, the Ukrainian military in the Waffen SS and the Red Army, the role of Ukraine in American shuttle bombing of Germans, the role of Ukrainians in developing radar, helicopters, the French resistance and Ukrainian participation in it, displaced persons and refugee camp experience, Soviet Repatriation, the costs of war, Soviet legacy, national rebirth and the Orange Revolution.

The book is not merely a dry presentation of facts, dates and names but an engaging analysis of the thinking and the deep-seated drives that influenced the ambitions and determinations of people in power.

The three authors ….and the editorial group have done a superb job in putting this book together. This publication and the film of the same title should appeal to a wide audience outside of the Ukrainian diaspora community. It will be especially useful to any student, regardless of ethnic background, that needs to write a senior paper, a Masters thesis, or select a Ph.D. dissertation topic. Anyone who is interested in twentieth century history should have these sources in their home library, and educators and librarians should ensure that it is available in school and university libraries.

Книжка Незвичайні долі звичайних жінок постала з т. зв. жіночого проєкту, який 2001 року започаткував Українсько-Канадський Дослідчо- Документаційний Центр у Торонті (Канада). До проєкту долучився Інститут історичних досліджень Львівського національного університету ім. Івана Франка зі своїм архівом усної історії. З 250 інтерв'ю, що знаходяться в архівах двох інституцій, до книжки увійшло 21, включно з таблицями даних про оповідачок і CD-диск зі спогадами. Оповідачки походять з 16 областей України, Криму і Сибіру. Серед інтерв’юйованих жінок є ті, що пережили репресії, розкуркулення, Голодомор 1932–1933 рр., події Карпатської України, ув’язнення в нацистських та радянських концтаборах, голод 1946-1947 рр., депортацію, акцію «Вісла»; є жінки, які допомагали УПА та рятували життя євреям. Найстарша з оповідачок 1893 року народження, наймолодша – 1934.
