ucubiz Spotlight On: eprider

Razom Media

EPRIDER (Electric Powered Rider).

UCU is proud to sponsor "Rock, Reforms & Relief: A Weekend For Ukraine"

UCU is very proud to support Dopomoha Ukraini's "Rock, Reforms & Relief" - an immersive weekend of talks, entertainment, and solidarity that will raise funds for Patriot Defence, and also the newly launched ATO Widows' Rehab program.

While the Ukrainian community abroad has done a tremendous amount of work toward supporting soldiers themselves, we must remember about those who are experiencing the war almost as harshly from the sidelines - the ATO Widows Rehab Program is a new initiative that helps women and families of fallen soldiers rebuild their lives and obtain the psychological support and therapy they need to begin the healing process.

Over the course of the weekend, four prominent guests from Ukraine will be providing their perspectives on the unfolding situation through a variety of fora.

UCU Helps Ukraine: Andriy Usach

Andriy Usach is a father of two girls, 8 and 11, whose love of his country was reawakened when he visited the Maidan from his hometown of Rivne.
Unable to sit idly by as his country was being invaded, he voluntarily enlisted and was deployed to Luhansk and Donetsk shortly thereafter, with the 80th airborne division of Lviv.

One day, he did not call home - indicating that something had gone wrong. It turns out that while near the airport in Luhansk, his batallion became encircled following an artillery attack, Andriy himself sustaining quite serious injuries.

Andriy and his fellow injured soldiers were unable to break through the enemy lines for 4 days – and only then, under heavy fire, were they able to get to a rescue helicopter that took them to Kharkiv  –  from there he was promptly transported to the Lviv hospital.
In Kharkiv, Andriy was diagnosed with what could only be described as compound blast injuries.
Schrapnel had severed both bones in his left forearm, in addition to leaving behind hundreds of tiny shards, which has resulted in extreme and worsening damage to his soft tissues. He also has lost most of his upper left leg as a result of soft tissue damage due to schrapnel. He also has severe burns and wounds on his face and severe damage to the muscles in his face, his teeth, and lower left jaw.

The people of Ukraine gathered money for for Andriy’s treatment and prosthetics - almost 150,000 on a prepaid card, currently the safest and quickest way to get money to people in Ukraine.
However, Andriy’s identity was stolen, and the card was compromised and drained of funds before he even received it. This was a result of too much information about Andriy being available – with the phone number tied to the card made public, and information such as birthday and address quite easy to obtain, his identity was easily compromised.

To contribute toward Andriy's treatments and therapies, please visit your branch or contact the call centre at 1.800.461.0777 to make a donation.

Oops or wow!

In the previous post, we wrote that the war is taking its toll on the Ukrainian economy and provided data indicating that Ukraine’s GDP in the last quarter of 2014 dropped by 15%. Ukraine’s Statistics Service has recently reported that the country’s exports dropped by 31.2% in US dollar terms in January 2015 as compared to January 2014, while its imports dropped by 33.4%. Attention: the same indicators for the same period, but with respect to Russia: their exports are down 30.5% and imports are down 40.4%.

It has been said many times that this war is not only one of the bloodiest in the recent history, but it is also a war between two economies. Russia and Ukraine share the same long-term problem of being mismanaged by incompetent and corrupt governments. At the same time, the Ukrainian economy is historically more diversified and thus stands a better chance in the war than it might seem from the first glance. It seems as though Putin is waiting for Ukraine’s economic collapse before Russia’s economy does. But without the Russian economy being damaged by the war, the Russian trade data is indicating an even greater drop than Ukraine’s. This is revealing.

Western sanctions, which restrict sales of some high-tech equipment to Russia, and Russian “sanctions” which restrict imports of many types of foods from numerous Western countries may be partly behind the plunge of Russian imports in January. The decline of Russian exports, identical to the decline of Ukraine’s exports, shows that the Russian economy on the whole is more vulnerable than the Ukrainian one. Is this fact behind the current lull in the fighting?

UCU Helps Ukraine: Anton Savko

Anton Savko was born in 1992, grew up, and began working hard as a waiter and labourer, trying to build himself a good life. Before he was deployed to the ATO, Anton was the one who delivered draft letters to his village - and one day, a letter came for him. And he went - how could he not after having been the one carrying his fellow villagers their destinies? He departed for the ATO in the 128th Zakarpattia Infantry Brigade in the first mobilization.
During a battle near Debaltsevo, not far from where Viktor Yanukovich hails, Anton suffered the worst of his injuries. During a particularly intense mortar attack, the soldiers dove into a dugout and were reasonably protected. Once the explosions subsided, Anton got out first to check if a return to the base was safe. He was then injured by a mine, and lost recollection of everything thereafter.

He sustained an explosion that blew an 8x8cm hole into his skull, and with an open head wound was transported to Artemivsk, and then by helicopter to Dnipropetrovsk. He was unable to speak for 7 days after the injury and only able to communicate by writing. His speech abilities have returned but Anton is unable to remember anything.

He underwent neurosurgery in Lviv to contain the damage and recovers in the Lviv Military Hospital where he receives therapy, but much more is needed to help Anton regain many of his faculties. With the majority of his left-side completely paralysed, Anton, a kind hearted, good man, faces incredible challenges and a long road ahead with several surgeries scheduled for the summer.
Anton requires help from us to continue his therapy - his Dad Vasyl stays by his side in Lviv, and has asked for help to help his son as he cannot do it himself.

To contribute toward Anton's treatments and therapies, please visit your branch or contact the call centre at 1.800.461.0777 to make a donation.

Mobile Customer Connect

Mobile Customer Connect.

The impact of war is becoming clear

First, The Russian Federation invaded Crimea in March 2014 and claimed it as part of their territory. They then invaded the Donbas in early summer 2014 and, by the fall of 2014, up to 40% of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions became war zones. One of the problems is that the affected areas host considerable industrial capacity of the Donbas region and account for up to 20% of Ukraine’s GDP. Large steel mills in Enakieve, Alchevsk, Makiivka and Donetsk, a giant chemical plant Stirol in Horlivka, big machinery plants in Luhansk, Donetsk and Horlivka have all stopped working, or are no longer accounted for on the Ukrainian books.

The impact of this tragedy was not so visible up until the fourth quarter of 2014 and for the whole year of 2014 Ukraine’s GDP dropped by just 6.7%. In the fourth quarter of 2014, Ukraine’s GDP dropped by 15% as compared to the fourth quarter of 2013. More numbers are coming in which continue to show the extent of the economic impact Russia’s war against Ukraine is having. In January 2015, Ukraine’s exports dropped by 31.2% as compared to January 2014, which is understandable given that the Donbas steel and chemical industries are some of Ukraine’s main exporters. This decline in exports has drastically reduced the inflow of hard currency to Ukraine, resulting in the considerable weakness of the hryvnia relative to the USD and EUR.

If Ukraine manages to avoid further declines in its economy, it is fair to expect that its GDP will have contracted by at least 15% in 2015. If the war does not protract and provided that global economic growth is stable, Ukraine’s GDP might start growing again in 2016.

Don't let the spring thaw leave you all wet!

An important message from CUMIS (UCU's Insurance partner)

Before the showers begin, here are some timely tips...

It's almost springtime and it's not uncommon to experience rapidly changing temperatures that can lead to melting and then flash-freezing. At CUMIS, we're putting people first by offering these property maintenance and safety tips for your consideration. Some may apply to you and some may not - but we're sure you'll find valuable tips and advice in this message.

Personal Safety:

  • Watch for falling snow and ice from roofs during the thaw.
  • Inspect roofs from the inside for leaks or structural deficiencies. Falls from roofs and possible exposure to electrical wires while on the roof are serious hazards.
  • Sand and/or salt icy areas around entrances.
  • Keep children and pets away from waterways. Due to spring runoff, water levels are higher than usual and the banks of small creeks and rivers may erode and collapse. Stay away from ice on any body of water - it rarely thaws evenly, and is likely very unstable.

Property Maintenance:

  • Regularly check for ice around the roof line; remove icicles and/or blocked areas where icicles may fall.
  • Clear areas around downspouts and exhaust vents so that water from melting snow has a path to flow away from the house or building. Direct the flow away from walkways and entrances.
  • Watch for signs of roof problems such as leaks, deflection of ceiling finishes or exposed beams.
  • If safe to do so, move snow at least 2-3 feet from the foundation of houses and buildings to minimize the possibility of seepage.

UCU Helps Ukraine: Oleksij Kondratenko

Oleksiy Kondratenko is an orphan who led a successful life as a welder in Chervonyj Lan, Zhytomyr. Just like many young Ukrainians, found his dreams and way of life destroyed by the war. He was mobilized to the ATO as an intelligence officer on August 23rd, under the 30th Mechanized Division of Novohrad Volynskyj.

On November 4th and 5th, a mobilized group of LNR terrorists tried to force their way to Siverskyj Donets near Shchastia, and even under heavy mortar fire and artillery strikes, the Ukrainian soldiers managed to keep the enemies at bay.

On February 6th, soldiers of the 30th Division accompanied a convoy carrying people and materials for the installation of a new checkpoint near Shchastia. The convoy was attacked, and Oleksiy was hit by large shrapnel that tore apart much of his left side, piercing his belly and damaging many of his internal organs. Smaller bits lodged themselves in his head, and he has undergone several surgeries to remove it.

To stop the bleeding, his arm and leg were tied off on the battlefield until he could be transferred to a clinic in Bilovodsk. From there he travelled to Kharkiv and eventually to the Lviv Hospital where he has been since February 8th.

It is truly heartbreaking to see young and hopeful, humble and hardworking Ukrainians like Oleksiy lying maimed and wounded in hospital beds, unable to return to their lives as a result of this senseless war.

Who is winning the economic war?

As Ukraine and Russia are done guessing about Putin’s disappearance, it makes sense to consider what is going on in the two countries’ economies. We have said a number of times that this war, just like any other, is not only fought on the battlefields, but also on the financial and other markets.

The war is now exactly one year old. Considering the state of the Ukrainian economy one year ago, when it already had been severely damaged by the global crisis and years of looting by the Yanukovych thugs, the fact that Ukraine is still able to fight the war which takes dozens of millions of dollars daily, is quite amazing. Yes, the war has brought Ukraine to the brink of insolvency, and the IMF is basically throwing the country a lifeline with USD 5 billion which have already been allocated last week and another USD 5 billion coming later in the year.
But we need to realize that the country has lost more than 20% of its industrial capacity, and most of that is lost for good. Tens of thousands of acres in the war zone and surrounding areas are now filled with land mines and will not be cultivated for years. On this background, the decline of Ukraine’s GDP in 2014 amounted to just 6.7%. The decline will likely steepen in 2015 as the drop in the last quarter of 2014 was at 15%. However, the IMF expects that Ukraine’s economy will grow by 2% in 2016.
Unlike Ukraine, Russia has not been damaged by the war. But it is suffering from a triple whammy – high military spending, western financial sanctions and low oil prices. Russia’s GDP dropped by 1.1% and its oil revenues went down 42% in January this year (although in physical terms its oil exports rose 8.5%). Russia’s natural gas exports in January dropped by 29% in physical terms and by 42% financially. Are these numbers behind Putin’s disappearance? All the experts, regardless of whether they are saying that Putin is overthrown or still in power, think so. The price for oil, which has resumed its decline, seems to be on Ukraine’s side, at least for now.
