UCU Helps: Serhiy Saliy

After a long time spent in the emergency department, Serhiy V. Saliy, born in 1960, was transferred to the Lviv military hospital’s neurosurgery ward. He is a resident of Kyiv and an entrepreneur by occupation. He volunteered to join the military and was mobilized on February 8, 2015. First, he got a training at the Yavoriv grounds, then in Kamianets-Podilskyy, where he received training as a sapper. Afterwards, he joined the 92nd Mechanized Brigade, and eventually he was sent to the war
zone. He was injured near the town of Shchastia, says Serhiy, "on the very front" - the contact line, during the assignment. "I was fired at by a Russian expert sniper. The bullet hit me and I instantly could not feel my legs, and after five seconds I lost consciousness and do not remember anything more. Later I felt that I was being transferred by a car, and then I was taken to Kharkiv. There I had my spine operated on and was airlifted to Lviv "- Serhiy says in a barely audible voice, he's still very sick. The bullet with a displaced center of gravity crushed his spine and spinal cord, pierced his lung, kidney, and both thick and thin intestines. "God helped me to get out of this trouble, so, now I have to get well" – a hero smiles. When we first met him, Serhiy did not want to talk about himself, he said he was "a simple soldier and did nothing heroic." But we believe that every soldier is a hero.
