CUF Medical Mission to Ukraine

We received the following press release from the Canada Ukraine Foundation regarding the Operation Rainbow mission to Ukraine which Ukrainian Credit Union Limited helped fund. Here is the text of the press release:

Canadian funded medical team completes 37 complex surgeries

Toronto, Canada (November 20, 2014) - A specialized team of Canadian health professionals recently returned home after completing a medical mission in Ukraine. The team worked alongside Ukrainian doctors and nurses in performing reconstructive complex surgical procedures on victims of the Euromaidan movement and Vladimir Putin’s invasion into Eastern Ukraine.

The mission was organized by the Canada Ukraine Foundation and Operation Rainbow Canada, under the patronage of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. The medical team of 25 professionals was comprised entirely of volunteers and included surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses. The team was assembled from across Canada including Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto.  Over 60 patients from across Ukraine with complex post-traumatic defects and deformities were seen in consultation. A total of 37 reconstructive procedures were performed in 30 patients. These included:

• 7 skull reconstructions
• 10 bony reconstructions of the facial skeleton
• 9 soft tissue reconstructions of the eyelids, nose, lips
• 5 burn and scar revisions
• 6 upper extremity reconstructions

“This mission focused on post-traumatic defects and deformities, many of which were horrific. Most resulted from explosive blast wounds and high-velocity missile wounds. The patients presented major reconstructive challenges,” said Dr. Oleh Antonyshyn, Head of the Adult Craniofacial Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Professor of Plastic Surgery, University of Toronto. “The surgical procedures were complex, technically demanding, and time-consuming, some lasting for as many as 7 hrs  We hope to return in the near future and continue to work with our Ukrainian counterparts to provide the best possible care to those injured in the current crisis”.

Funding for the mission came from “United for Ukraine”, a gala fundraiser organized by the Canada Ukraine Foundation held in September in Toronto.

UCU member Stephanie Turenko loves telling stories, and will tell them in any way she can! A real multi-media maven, she is a founding member of Toronto’s Kosa Kolektiv folk arts group, an animated filmmaker, photographer, podruha at Plast, blogger and aspiring teacher.

She spent the last year working in Michalovce, Slovakia, teaching English to children, teens, and pretty much everyone in town, and had a chance to immerse herself in a culture different, yet not entirely dissimilar, to our own. 1. Russian Invasion of Ukraine
The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (RNBO) reported at 12:30 PM Kyiv time that Kremlin-backed terrorists continued to shell and attack Ukrainian positions. At the same time, conflicts between various terrorist bands in occupied territories are increasing. Towards Donetsk, Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions at the Donetsk airport five times with artillery, mortars and grenade launchers. Ukrainian forces repelled all attacks, causing heavy casualties among Kremlin-backed terrorists. Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions near Pisky, Troitske, Vesele and Adviyivka. Towards Debaltsevo, Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions near Nikishyne, Ridkodub, Donetskyi, and Novoshkivske with Grads (truck-mounted multiple rocket launchers). Near the Bakhmutvika highway, Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions with Grads near Nyzhne, and near Sokilnyky and Tryokhizbenka, Kremlin-backed terrorists fired on Ukrainian positions with tanks, mortars and grenade launchers. Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions near Shchastya with Grads. Towards Mariupol, Kremlin-backed terrorists fired on Ukrainian positions near Hranitne, Orlovske and Mykolaivka from tanks and artillery. The RNBO reported that in the last 24 hours, 2 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 13 wounded. The RNBO reported that on 18 November, Kremlin-backed terrorists of the so-called Luhansk “Peoples’ Republic” shelled Toshkivka village with Grads. Several shells hit a building, killing three people and seriously injuring four. Two of the injured are children.

2. Ukrainian President signs Law on Internally Displaced Persons
Ukrainian President P. Poroshenko signed the law On guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of Internally Displaced Persons, which was passed by Parliament on 20 October. The purpose of the law is to ensure the implementation of constitutionally guaranteed rights and freedoms of internally displaced persons – citizens of Ukraine. The law foresees the creation of proper conditions for social adaptation, temporary accommodation, assistance in employment, continued education, and the promotion of opportunities to get humanitarian and charitable aid, from international institutions, organizations and different countries. Poroshenko stated that the law is not optimal and will need to be revised when the new Parliament begins its work.

3. Ukrainian PM: We won’t engage in direct negotiations with terrorists
Ukrainian PM A. Yatsenyuk stated, “In response to habitual statements of the Russian side, I would like to emphasize once again – and this is a common position of the Head of the Ukrainian State and the entire Ukrainian Government: the best and most effective type of negotiation is the Geneva format [US, EU, Ukraine, Russia]. […] We won’t engage in direct negotiations with the Russian terrorists. If you want peace – just abide by the Minsk agreement.” The PM also stated that the government would continue to try to deliver humanitarian aid, but “While Russian mercenaries are on the territory of Ukraine, there is no single opportunity to direct there any social benefits or funds. People are living in poverty.”

1. Russian Invasion of Ukraine
The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (RNBO) reported at 12:30 PM Kyiv time that shelling by Kremlin-backed terrorists of Ukrainian positions diminished somewhat, and that there were no attacks on Ukrainian positions in the last 24 hours, as a result of the fact that in the last few days Kremlin-backed terrorists suffered heavy losses during attacks. At the same time, however, the use of Grads (truck-mounted multiple rocket launchers) by Kremlin-backed terrorists increased in the last 24 hours. Towards Debaltsevo, Kremlin-backed terrorists fired mortars and small arms at a Ukrainian positions, and fired Grads at Ukrainian positions in the south end of the city. Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions with artillery and mortars near Orlovo-Ivanivka, Vuhlehirsk, Luhanske, and Donetskyi. The RNBO reported that according to operational information, several dozen bodies of Kremlin-backed terrorists and Russian soldiers who were killed near Debaltsevo, on the order of the leadership of Kremlin-backed terrorist groups, were thrown into a tunnel of a mine, which was then detonated. Towards Luhansk, Kremlin-backed terrorists continue to shell Ukrainian position near Stanytsia Luhanska, Petrivka, Troyokhizbenka and Shchastya. Towards Donetsk, Kremlin-backed terrorists twice fired on Ukrainian positions at the Donetsk airport with artillery and small arms. Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions with tanks near Taramchuk, Grads and mortars – near Troyitske, and mortars near Adviyivka. Towards Mariupol, Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions with tanks and mortars near Hranitne, Orlovske and Zamozhne. The RNBO reported that in the last 24 hours six Ukrainian soldiers were killed and nine wounded. The RNBO reported that the humanitarian situation in territories controlled by Kremlin-backed terrorists is getting worse, and that in Sverdlovsk, Luhansk oblast, Torez, and Yenakievo, Donetsk oblast, city residents took part in protests against the actions of Kremlin-backed terrorists.

Some of you reading this article might already know about the benefits of belonging to a credit union. Many of you probably already are members of Ukrainian Credit Union Limited or belong to one of the many community groups that benefit from the financial support of Ukrainian Credit Union Limited (UCU). However, I know that there are many people out there who are not very familiar with credit unions in general, and lots of people who do not know there are credit unions, such as ours, that are dedicated to serving the Ukrainian community directly.

Credit unions are trusted by millions of Canadians

Credit unions are financial institutions that count you in as a member and an owner, not just a customer. The principle of putting members first galvanized the growth of credit unions and caisse populaires (the French-language version of credit unions) over 100 years ago in Canada. Today there are around 5.3 million members at 336 credit unions and caisses populaires in Canada that manage almost $165.6 billions of assets[i] which represents a 6% increase over 2013. As the millions of credit union members will tell you, credit unions work hard for and with their members, making a difference in their local communities.

1. Russian Invasion of Ukraine
The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (RNBO) reported at 12:30 PM Kyiv time that the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts has become more complicated. The Ukrainian military has identified a constant redeployment of Russian military equipment with Kremlin-backed terrorist insignia towards the demarcation line. Russian military units (including long-range air defense and aviation brigades) are being concentrated along the Ukraine-Russia border. Towards Luhansk, Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled two Ukrainian positions near Stanytsia Luhanska. Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions near Vilkhove, Shchastya, and Kryakivka six times with Grads (truck-mounted multiple rocket launchers), and fired on Ukrainian positions near Staryi Aidar and Artem with mortars and small arms. Ukrainian forces repelled an attack on a position near Sokilnyky. Towards Pervomaisk, Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions at Krymske and Frunze with Grads and fired mortars on positions near Zolote. Towards Donetsk, Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled the Donetsk airport twice, and fired mortars on Ukrainian positions near Pisky, Opytne, Troitske, Adviyivka and Slavne.  Towards Debaltsevo. The RNBO reported that 2 Russian soldiers were detained near the Donetsk airport. Kremlin-backed terrorists fired mortars, grenade launchers and small arms at Ukrainian positions near Nikishine, Debaltsevo, Kamyanka, Mayorske, and Donetskyi. Towards Mariupol, Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions near Mykolaivka, Orlivske, and Shevchenko.  The RNBO stated that in the last 24 hours, 4 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 19 wounded. The press-center of the Anti-Terrorism Operation (ATO) reported at 5:30 PM Kyiv time that near Horlivka, Ukrainian artillery forces destroyed up to 10 pieces of military equipment and killed up to 20 Kremlin-backed terrorists. The RNBO reported that there has been an increase in the shelling of residential areas; Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Shchastya, Krymske, Zolote and Troitske; as a result, 2 civilians were injured in Zolote. Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Stanytsia Luhanska with mortars and artillery 8 times, damaging a kindergarten and several private homes in Molodizhne districts. Shells also hit three apartment buildings, and a school in Artem village near Stanytsia Luhanska was damaged.

Нещодавно одна з щоденних газет в Торонто опублікувала статтю про те, наскільки сьогоднішні студенти фінансово розумніші, ніж у минулому. Вони також досить досвідчені у використанні різних фінансових продуктів і послуг.

Фінансова грамотність є одною з ключових навиків життя але, на жаль, рідко набувається в школах. Так що, це приємно читати, коли студенти розуміють, що навіть невеликі фінансові рішення сьогодні, можуть мати важливі наслідки для майбутнього майна або відсутність його.

1. Russian Invasion of Ukraine
The National Security and Defense Council (RNBO) reported at 12:30 PM Kyiv time that the intensity of shelling of Ukrainian positions by Kremlin-backed terrorists has increased and military equipment and personnel continue to be transferred from the Russian Federation to Ukrainian territory. In the last 24 hours, 5 Russian drone reconnaissance aircraft were identified near Mariupol and Tryokhizbenky. In the areas where these reconnaissance flights were spotted, Kremlin-backed terrorists began heavy artillery shelling. Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions near Hranitne, Starohnativka, Novohryhorivka and Novolaspa villages in Donetsk oblast. Kremlin-backed terrorists shelled Ukrainian positions at the Donetsk airport 4 times with artillery, mortars and grenade launchers, and shelled Ukrainian positions near Debaltseve with Grads (truck-mounted multiple rocket launchers) and mortars. The RNBO reported that in the last 24 hours, 2 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 9 wounded. The Donetsk city administration reported at 6:30 PM Kyiv time that 2 teenagers were killed and 3 injured when a shell struck a playground at school no. 63 on Stepanenko street in Donetsk city.

2. Ukrainian Government will stop financing territories under control of Kremlin-backed terrorists
Ukrainian PM A. Yatseniuk stated that no funds will be directed from the central budget to the parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts under the control of Kremlin-backed terrorists. The government will continue to deliver gas and electricity in order to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe. Yatseniuk stated that “while territories of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts are under the control of various self-proclaimed [authorities] the central budget will not send money there. The government will not finance terrorists. […] I officially state that all pensions, all social payments, all benefits are being counted for each person. When Russian terrorists leave the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, we will immediately regain control of the territories and pay out to each person those social benefits to which they have a right. Today, [if we] make payments to these territories – this money will not reach the people – it will be stolen...and this is nothing else than direct support for Russian terrorism.”

University of Ottawa Ukrainian Students' Club (USC uOttawa) organized and held the first kickoff in a series networking and mentoring event with the President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), Mr. Eugene Czolij, who delivered an exclusive talk "World Crisis with Ukraine in the Forefront" to numerous USC uOttawa members and Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Program (CUPP) 2014 interns on October 28, 2014  at Marion auditorium, University of Ottawa.

Mr. Eugene Czolij is recognized in 2015 edition of Best Lawyers in Canada as a leading practitioner in the fields of Corporate and Commercial Litigation and Insolvency and Financial Restructuring. USC uOttawa is a club that unites University of Ottawa students whose aim is promoting Ukrainian language and culture. CUPP is a Canadian Parliamentary annual 3-month long Internship aimed at contributing to education of future leaders of Ukraine, and promoting top-notch Western democratic values.

USC Ottawa is convinced that Mr. Eugene Czolij's leadership as a President of the global Ukrainian diaspora organization representing 20 million people (UWC) will largely facilitate global crisis mitigation and positive transformation in Ukraine by CUPP 2014 interns, and in Canada by USC uOttawa members.

After the discussion, USC uOttawa Executive members and organizers Iuliia Zubrytska, Sofia Kominko, and President Michael Burchill awarded Mr. Czolij with a medal distinguishing Mr. Eugene Czolij's support of the rule of law in Ukraine.

Так званий голодний полуденок розпочався з молитви та вшанування сучасних Героїв України, які поклали своє життя на жертівник України та й сьогодні захищають її Східні кордони від ворожої навали.

Ведучими цього заходу були голова Гамільтонської філії Суспільної служби українців Канади Тамара Дудка та член цієї служби Надя  Дусанівська.

Тамара Дудка, яка вже понад 20 років очолює цю громадську організацію, у своєму виступі відзначила, що організована збірка є особливою актуальною, адже з часу Євромайдану та особливо тепер, коли Схід України потерпає від терористів та російської агресії, потреба в допомозі потребуючим братам і сестрам в Україні дуже зросла. Вона наголосила, що Суспільна служба не може стояти осторонь цих подій і тому ще більше активізувала свою працю. Тільки цього року члени Гамільтонської філії Суспільної служби українців Канади зібрали понад $40,000, на які підтримали теплим одягом, взуттям і ліками Євромайдани в Україні та допомогли сім’ям і дітям-сиротам Героїв Небесної сотні, біженцям із Криму та Східних областей України, пораненим учасникам АТО і родинам загиблих від рук російських найманців та терористів.

November is Holodomor Remembrance Month. Листопад – місяць Пам’яті Жертв Голодомору.

In memoriam UCU will be holding a food drive. Drop off your dry or canned goods at any UCU branch and they will be donated to a local food bank.

Вшановуючи пам’ять жертв голодомору Українська Кредитова Спілка розпочинає збір продуктів харчування у всіх відділеннях УКС, які будуть передані у місцеві інстанції.

Artist for Shevchenko Statue in Timmins selected

Earlier this year, the Ukrainian Canadian community in Timmins Ontario approached Ukrainian Credit Union Limited with a request for help in funding a new Taras Shevchenko statue in a local park. The existing statue was vandalized. The folks organizing this project have been sending us info from time to time to show the progress. Below is the text of a news release we received last week.


MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENT – October 29, 2014

Northern Ontario Artist chosen to Create Statue of Famous Ukrainian Poet Taras Shevchenko for Kobzar Park in Timmins, Ontario, Canada

The Kobzar Park Rejuvenation Committee is pleased to announce they have selected Tyler Fauvelle, a talented Northern Ontario artist based in Lively, Ontario, to create a bronze statue for Kobzar Park located in downtown Timmins, Ontario, Canada.

The statue depicts the famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, and is being created to celebrate the bicentennial of his birth in 2014. The height of statue will be 4 feet tall and depicts Shevchenko standing in traditional winter dress with a Persian lamb skin hat, holding a collection of poetry close to his heart. The sculpture is currently at a foundry in Toronto waiting to be cast into bronze and will be officially unveiled at Kobzar Park in downtown Timmins in August 2015.
