UCU was a proud contributor to the memorial opened in France to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Hill 70 to honour the memory of Canadian military members who distinguished themselves and our country at this pivotal event of World War I. Our credit union was a key sponsor of the portion of the memorial known as Filip Konowal VC Walk, named for the Ukrainian Canadian war
hero whose Victoria Cross is today displayed at the National War Museum in Ottawa.

UCU (Toronto) assets in 1955 exceeded $1,000,000. By this time there are five other Ukrainian Credit Unions in Toronto. In 1956 the 2000th member signed up to our Credit Union.

Empowering new generations #UCU75

The Ukrainian National Youth Federation (UNYF) was founded on July 27th, 1934 in the prairie city of Saskatoon, and quickly spread throughout the country. Toronto quickly became one of the biggest branches and the UNYF crowd joined UNF projects as well as the co-operative financial movement.

In recognition of the importance of youth to the future of UCU, the Youth Unlimited account is a credit union account for members 24 years and younger, that grows right along with you!

Молодіжне Українське Національне Об'єдання (МУНО) було засноване 27 липня 1934 року у канадських преріях - у місті Саскатун. Рух швидко поширився по всій країні, а Торонто невдовзі стало одим із найбільших відділень. Когорта "мунівців" приєдналася до проектів "дорослого" УНО, а також до кооперативного фінансового руху, ставши членами УКС(Торонто).

В УКС ми віримо, що молодь - майбутнє Кредитної Спілки, тому наш Необмежений Молодіжний Рахунок в УКС працює для членів віком до 24 років та росте разом із вами!

Following the community with new locations #UCU75

We have 16 branches and services points across Ontario, from Windsor to Ottawa and Thunder Bay to St. Catharines, however the largest part of our business in centred in the GTA. As a community-based business, we grow and move together with Ukrainians in their neighbourhoods.

For example, we originally opened North York branch because many immigrants from Ukraine and neighbouring countries moved to the area after the fall of the Soviet Union. It started as a UCU Service Point in 2000.

A new, modern and highly-equipped branch in Vaughan opened in 2018. This location replaced the branch at 5799 Yonge location, moving together with the community to the North.

УКС має 16 відділів та пунктів обслуговування по всьому Онтаріо, від Віндзора до Оттави та від Тандер-Бей до Сант-Катарінс, однак найбільша частина нашого бізнесу зосереджена в GTA. Як бізнес, що виріс із громади, ми ростемо і переїждаємо разом з українцями, що змінюють свої райони.

Наприклад, відділ у Північному Йорку спочатку відкрили там, де оселилося багато іммігрантів з України та сусідніх країн, що переїхали після розвалу Радянського Союзу. Воно починалося, як пункт обслуговування УКС у 2000 році.

А у 2018му ми відкрили нове, сучасне та оснащенне усім необхідним відділення у місті Вонн. Цей відділ замінив колишній відділ у Північному Йорку, що знаходився на 5799 Yonge та переїхав, як і українська громада почала переїжджати, іще далі на північ.

Immigration is again driving growth for UCU. Hundreds of new members from Ukraine, Poland, and former Soviet Bloc territories join yearly. Continued efforts to attract our youth with initiatives such as Internet bank services, as well as our award-winning Youth Unlimited line of products, are retaining memberships from second, third, and fourth generation Ukrainian Canadians as well as newcomers. Ukrainian by soul and heart! #UCU75

In the past two and a half decades, many other community credit unions have merged with UCU. Those joining in the 80s include Plast (Toronto); St. Mary’s Dormition Parish (Mississauga); Ukrainian CU (London); St. George’s Ukrainian (Oshawa); Ukrainian CU (Windsor); and, Ukrainian People’s Home (Toronto). In 1989, the credit union dropped the Toronto designation from its name to better represent its new pan-Ontario inclusiveness.

In the mid-1990s, when Thunder Bay’s Ukrainian (Ft. William) Credit Union closed, its members joined the newly established UCU branch in Thunder Bay. In 1999, Ukrainian (Sudbury) Credit Union joined the UCU family. It was itself the union of Ukrainian СU (Sudbury), St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish CU, and the Ukrainian Youth Association CU. The same year St. Demetrius Parish (Etobicoke) also joined UCU.

За останні два з половиною десятиліття багато інших громадських кредитних спілок об'єдналися з УКС. Ті, що приєдналися в 80-ті роки включають Пласт (Торонто); Успенська парафія Святої Марії (Mississauga); Українська КС (Лондон, Онтаріо); Українська Спілка Святого Юрія (Ошава); Українська КС (Віндзор); Український народний дім (Торонто). У 1989 році УКС позбулася прив’язки до Торонта у своїй назві, аби краще відображати приналежність до Онтарійської громади.

У середині 1990-х років, коли Українська Кредитна Спілка Тандер-Бей (Форт. Вільям) закрилася, її члени утворили УКС Тандер-Бей. У 1999 році до сім'ї УКС вступила Українська Кредитна Спілка з Садбері. Сама вона був об'єднанням Української Спілки (Садбері), КС Української католицької парафії Святої Марії та Cпілки Української молодіжної асоціації. Того ж року КС Парафії Св. Димитрія (Етобіко) приєдналася до УКС.

Our very first Toronto address was on 300 Bathurst Street. Now you might consider Toronto's Bloor West Village, southern Etobicoke or eastern Mississauga as Ukrainian neighbourhoods, but as a community, we started in the downtown core. 

In 1945 UNF Toronto along with Ukrainian (Toronto) Credit Union moved from 300 Bathurst Street to 783 College Street. 

To imagine how different that time was, here is one more interesting fact: until 1949 Ukrainian (Toronto) Credit Union only operated one hour a week on Friday evenings. 

Today we are a fully-functioning business with 16 locations across Ontario, working 5-6 days a week (depends on the location) and operating 24/7 through online banking and the UCU mobile app. 


Найперша торонтівська адреса теперішньої УКС - 300 Bathurst Street. Це зараз ми вважаємо Bloor West Village, південне Етобіко та східну Міссіссагу українськими районами, але починалося розселення громади з теперішнього центру міста. 

У 1945-му УНО-Торонто та Українська Кредитна Спілка(Торонто) переїхали з 300 Bathurst Street на 783 College Street.

Тільки уявіть, як сильно все змінилося з тої пори: до 1949 року Українська Кредитова Спілка (Торонто) працювала одну годину на тиждень - щоп'ятниці ввечері. 

Сьогодні УКС - це повноцінний бізнес із 16 відділеннями в Онтаріо. Залежно від локації, відделення працюють 5 або 6 днів на тиждень, а онлайн-банкінг та послуги через мобільний арр доступні 24/7.

Over the decades UCU has come to serve the broader community in Ontario. Yet, we still stay true to our original objectives to support the maintenance and growth of Ukrainian cultural and community life as our contribution to a strong, united and multicultural Canadian society.

Our first branch, under the name of Ukrainian (Toronto) Credit Union was established by Ukrainian National Federation in 1944. Initially, 26 UNF members participated in the charter. By the end of the year, membership comprised 91 members with nine outstanding loans totalling $17,600.
Building on this start, UCU`s membership and assets increased steadily. Early growth came from post-war settlers, later new deposit and loan products drove growth in the 60s and 70s. We understood the value of technology early on, becoming computerized in 1975, beating some of our larger, more established rivals in the Canadian banking industry to the punch. We were also among the first financial institutions to adopt ATM technology.

Найперше відділення було засноване під назвою Української Кредитової Спілки (Торонто) членами УНО у 1944 році. На момент створення, 26 членів УНО взяли участь в утворенні статутного фонду. До кінця першого року членами спілки стала 91 людина, а сума перших дев'яти позичок на звітний період складала $17,600.

Відтоді та нині УКС щроку нарощує свої активи та кількість членів. Перша хвиля успішного бізнесу прийшла разом із післявоєнною імміграцією українців, пізніше зростання посилило впровадження нових депозитних програм та кредитних продуктів у 60-х і 70-х роках. Від самого початку ми розуміли цінність технологій, тому з 1975го комп’ютеризовали всі системи, обігнавши багатьох куди більших та усталених на канадському банківському ринку конкурентів. Також ми були одними із перших впровадників технологій АТМ (банківських машин).

Ukrainian Credit Union Limited was founded in 1944 to serve the Ukrainian Canadian community. Over 75 years we have come to serve the broader Ontario community of which we are a part.

Early Ukrainian settlers in Canada arrived for the most part with few assets, little disposable cash, and often only a rudimentary financial education. Only byorganizing and helping each other could they hope to thrive in their adopted homeland. Community-based credit unions in Canada grew out of this need.

Українська Кредитова Спілка Лимитед була заснована у 1944 році на потреби української громади Канади. Протягом 75 років послугами УКС стали користуватися і члени інших громад в Онтаріо. 
Найперші українські імміграти до Канади приїздили з невеликими ресурсами, обмеженою кількістю готівки, а часто і з незначним рівнем обізнанності у фінансах. Саме завдяки організованності та готовності допомагати одне одному вони могли стати на ноги на новій батьківщині. Засновані на потреби громади кредитні спілки виростали з цих реалій та вимог часу.

UCU is a member-owned financial co-operative, so every member is also an owner (through purchasing a share when join the credit union). 

Membership/ownership vs simply being a customer, by the way, is one of the main differences between credit unions and banks. As a member/owner, you not only consume products and use financial services but can also influence how the credit union operates. 

УКС - це кооперативна фінансова установа, відповідно, кожен її член стає співвласником, приєднуючись до Спілки (шляхом придбання акцій у момент відкриттія рахунку).

Це, до речі, одна із головних відмінностей кредитних спілок від банків. Члени - не тільки споживачі банківських послуг УКС, але і повноправні її розпорядники.
